I often hear people define themselves as 'apolitical', 'uninvolved' in politics, or at least 'uninterested' in them. While the latter might be true, apoliticism is, at its core, an oxymoron. This is because every decision we make is political, even if it seems completely unrelated to politics. Let's look at a few examples.
Even a matter that seems strictly personal, such as getting married, is a political choice. Simply deciding to make the personal relationship officially recognised by the state can mean that you might have to pay lower taxes, receive certain benefits, or, in some cases, officially belong to your spouse with no right to divorce. In some countries, picking an immigrant spouse means that you have to 'vouch' for them, and this often comes with a huge stigma. The same goes for having children.
Another simple example is choosing what to buy: if you go to the shop and buy a jar of Nutella, that's a political decision for a few reasons. By buying it, you're supporting the dairy industry and deforestation, as it's based on palm oil, which is extremely problematic. Nestlé might be even worse: by buying their products, you're directly or indirectly financing a company that still hasn't apologised for claiming that water isn't a basic human right and which, according to some sources, has caused the deaths of millions of infants in developing countries. So, congratulations! By 'investing' (or not 'investing') in their products, you've made a political choice!
Finally, deciding not to participate in politics, not to vote or express your opinion on the matter is still a political choice, and an even more significant one than the previous examples. It means letting others make decisions for you and essentially following the crowd. Not speaking up when gun laws are lax and school shootings happen monthly, or when the country you live in and pay taxes to uses those taxes to support genocide and war, means you are supporting it. If you're not actively against it, you're for it. I don't make the rules. That's why, again, apoliticism in its strictest form cannot exist.
