The Kids Are Going to Be Okay

The kids will be fine if we just let them. This is what I realised today on my walk. Just as I sat down on a warm bench in the park, a horde of children ran towards me. They dropped their school bags on the floor, leaving all their worries on the grass. Then they started climbing a pile of big rocks. They were laughing and playing. Just like we did on warm spring days fifteen years ago.

A few years later, those same kids are going to fall in love. They're going to get hurt, fail exams and celebrate passing them. Some will get jobs, while others will continue their studies, but generally they will be okay.

The media seems to present the new generation of children as depressed, anxious, phone-addicted monsters. Don't get me wrong though; some of them are a bit messed up inside. But I was too, and so were many people in previous generations. Don't try to convince me that you didn't have at least a few classmates at primary school who were disrespectful to teachers, tested their limits, sped on scooters and bullied less popular kids. How are they now? Well, many of them are fine now, aren't they? Those who aren't are failures of the system.

The thing is, we have to let kids be okay. We have to let them fall without accusing the rock that they tripped on of being evil. We need to limit their screen time and encourage them to read books. We need to stop pushing them to fit into unrealistic beauty standards, and most importantly, we have to let them have a childhood by putting a stop to atrocities such as wars, genocides, global warming and hatred towards specific groups of people. Only then will the kids truly be okay.
